Impact rated doors

Why Make the Switch to Impact Rated Door?

Impact windows aren’t the only way to protect South Florida homes and businesses from the dangers of hurricane-driven debris. Impact rated doors are available that provide an elevated level of safety and security, along with a variety of other benefits. Impact doors are available for indoor usage and entryways to the outdoors.

The doors are available in multiple styles and colors. They’re offered in aluminum, fiberglass and vinyl, each providing its own level of safety and security. There’s an impact-rated door for traditional entryway openings, French/cabana doors, and sliding glass doorways, along with bi-fold doors and those that pivot. Specialty doors can be crafted and are an excellent solution for entrances that lead to backyard pools, patios and decks.

Impact rated doors feature impact glass that’s resistant to impacts and debris blown about by hurricane-force winds that can easily reach 100 mph. Doors represent the first line of defense when it comes to the safety and security of people living and working within the walls of any structure.

Safety

An impact-rated door is an effective deterrent against burglars and features impact glass. The specialty impact glass will fracture when it sustains an impact of sufficient force, but it won’t fall apart. The force needed to breach impact glass is excessive, noisy, and no thief wants to risk calling attention to themselves.

Savings

The doors are sturdy and the impact glass minimizes the transference of heat to the inside environment, while keeping the coolness of air conditioning inside. That means savings on utility bills. The glass also reduces the amount of UV rays that enter that can ruin flooring and furnishings. Insurance companies often provide savings on insurance policies for individuals that install impact doors.

Noise Pollution

Those living near busy intersections, parks, or loud neighbors experience substantial noise. The doors are excellent noise buffers, reducing the amount of sound that comes in. An added advantage is that noise from inside to the outside world is also reduced.

Hurricane Protections for you South Florida Home

Most South Florida residents have already begun to create lists and prepare for the annual hurricane season, that seems to be arriving earlier each year. The first named tropical storm of 2021 formed on May 22, a full week before the traditional beginning of hurricane season on June 1. There are a number of actions that individuals can take to help protect their homes and businesses, including the following.

Impact Windows

Unlike traditional window glass, impact windows are hurricane-rated. They’re impact-resistant and won’t break when an impact occurs. The glass is constructed in much the same way as auto safety glass. If a strong enough impact occurs, the glass will splinter, but it won’t fall out of the frame. That means secondary damage caused by rain entering a home or business won’t occur.

You don’t have to worry about storing shutters or plywood, or trying to hire someone long distance to put up protection if you’re traveling. The windows utilize energy-saving technology, use eco-friendly materials, and casements can withstand corrosive saltwater.

Impact Doors

You can choose from impact doors constructed of vinyl, fiberglass or aluminum, each with its own level of protection. The doors can be equipped with impact window glass. You can select from standard door configurations and sliders to French doors. Specialty doors are also available such as those that pivot.

Superior Protection

Impact windows and doors are available in multiple shapes, sizes and styles. They represent the best protection available against hurricanes and even “ordinary” coastal storms that can spring up suddenly and transition into much stronger flareups. The products have been extensively tested and meet the most stringent building code requirements for coastal areas.

Another benefit of installing impact windows and doors as hurricane protection is that they can also net you savings on your insurance premiums. Many insurance companies will provide discounts on policy premiums if you’ve installed the windows and doors.

Understanding Glass Color and Energy Ratings

When shopping for energy-efficient windows and doors, understanding the various ratings and the impact that glass color has leaves many individuals feeling overwhelmed and highly confused. Individuals are confronted with synonyms that include U-Factor, SHGC and VT. They mean little to people that are simply shopping for stylish and elegant windows to enhance their home. The following will help individuals make informed decisions.

U-Factor

Essentially, the U-Factor is a measure of how well a window insulates. U-Factor values range from .20 to 1.20. The lower the U-Factor number, the better the window will insulate. When shopping for new windows, Florida residents should strive for a U-Factor of under .30, combined with an SHGC under .30.

SHGC

The acronym SHGC stands for solar heat gain coefficient and is measured on a scale of 0 to 1. To qualify for an ENERGY STAR® rating, windows must have an SHGC of .25 or less. The SHGC is the measure of the amount of solar radiation that enters through the window and includes the effects of the frame in which the window is installed. It’s the amount of heat that’s absorbed and released into a room as heat – which has a direct effect on the cooling ability of air conditioning units and a home’s energy costs.

VT

This stands for visible transmittance and is the amount of light transmitted through the glazing of a window. It’s the amount of light that individuals perceive coming through their windows. The VT rating can be advantageous for individuals that want to experience more natural lighting in their home when combined with window glass that has a high energy efficiency rating.

Color

Just as dark-colored shingles absorb more heat, so do dark window colors. A window with dark-colored glass or tinting will absorb anywhere from 70 to 90 percent more heat/energy to which they’re exposed. There are coatings that can be applied to windows that enables the sun to shine unimpeded while minimizing the amount of heat absorbed from the sun’s rays.

What Are Impact Doors?

One of the most prudent steps you could take to safeguard your home from the devastating impact of a hurricane is to install hurricane impact doors on your residential property. This is especially true whether you’re a developer architect, contractor or a member of a condo association. Large, hurricane-resistant properties require the protection of multiple hurricane proofing windows and hurricane impact doors to keep expansive, devastating property damage at bay. In fact, in some areas across South Florida, even homes without a single window or door are required to be built with these types of hurricane-resistant construction features. You should also consider adding these types of hurricane resistance features to rental properties as well. This will help to ensure that your rental property is protected in the event of a hurricane.

These are specially designed doors that open to either side in response to an impact and resist debris and pressure. While they don’t offer any type of insulation or air leaks like traditional sash and window construction, they do provide a strong barrier to protect your home or business against heavy winds and hail. They are typically manufactured out of galvanized steel to ensure that they are long-lasting and withstand the forces of hurricanes.

These strong impact doors use a double curtain system comprised of plastic strips that run between two panes of glass. The first layer of glass is commonly made of PVC, fiberglass or laminate, while the second layer consists of PVC film. The PVC film is often acrylic, but sometimes composite materials are used. This film is sprayed with an adhesive that holds it together, providing you with a lifetime of protection. Many companies offer a 100% money-back guarantee against damage due to wind, hail, water damage and so on. In fact, many impact windows and doors come with a limited warranty against breakage due to impact, while others offer a lifetime warranty.

Another option when it comes to these durable, energy-efficient doors is that they can be installed without any frame, leading to a very sleek appearance. If you have a home that does not already have a great appearance, then an impact glass door is the perfect way to update your home. The only issue with this type of door is that they may cause some slight displacement in the structure of your home’s interior because of the weight of the glass. If your existing doors are aluminum, then this may not be a problem, but if your home is constructed from wood, you will need to consider adding a frame to the home. However, there are many impact doors that come with frames built right into them so that you do not need to make any modifications to your home’s interior.
