5 Tips for Hiring the Right Window Contractor

Hiring the right contractor for any job is important. However, it’s critical when engaging the services of an impact window installer. Costs can vary wildly and expensive doesn’t automatically mean better. A poorly performed installation can negate the purposes for which the windows were installed. The following are five tips for choosing the right window contractor in South Florida.

License & Insurance

The contractor of choice should have any pertinent licenses and be fully insured. Most professionals will display their license number on their business card and if they don’t, ask for it. They must be licensed in the locale in which the work will be performed and their license must be current. Licensing ensures that the contractor has passed written exams and works to industry standards.

References

While many business owners no longer keep hard copies of references in the digital age, clients aren’t shy about leaving reviews and recommendations online. Take the time to read reviews and contact individuals that have left both negative and positive experiences.

Contracts & Estimates

A reputable contractor will have no problem making a visit to the property where the work will be performed and provide a written estimate of what the entire job will cost. It should clearly state what will be done, how long it will take, the materials and products that will be used, and the full cost, labor included.

Make sure cleanup and disposal services are included in the contract, along with any warranty information. The contract should include the contractor’s name, address, phone number, and professional license number. Never pay for a job in full before it’s completed, don’t pay in cash, and always get a receipt.

Permits

There will be permits that are required before any work can commence and the regulations can vary depending upon the municipality. The selected contractor should be cognizant of the permits needed and obtain them prior to work beginning.

Better Business Bureau

Scam artists and the unscrupulous are using creative new ways to take advantage of the unwary. Even if the contractor has a strong online presence, good reviews, and boasts years of experience, a quick check with the Better Business Bureau can be extremely helpful in weeding out those that lack experience or are less than honest about their abilities and qualifications.

Can Impact Windows Help Reduce Noise?

Anyone that’s shopping for new windows has probably heard about the advantages of impact glass. Impact glass is energy efficient, adds an elevated level of safety and security, and can aid in reducing damage during a hurricane. However, it does have other advantages, one of which is the ability to reduce noise pollution.

Impact glass is thicker due to its multi-layered construction that’s combined with sturdier materials used for framing and sealants. The use of impact glass in any environment can reduce the amount of noise that enters a structure by up to 40 percent.

Traditional window glass has a sound transmission class (STC) rating somewhere in the high 20s, depending on the glass. While no window can offer complete soundproofing abilities, a window must have an STC rating of 45 or higher to earn a designation as “soundproof.” Window glass that provides noise reduction will typically range from an STC value of 48 to 54.

Simply installing dual pane windows won’t stop enough noise to create a noticeable difference. Individuals will definitely notice a reduction with impact glass. People will typically experience more noise intrusions through the walls of a structure than the windows.

The installation of impact glass for reducing noise levels enables individuals to prevent outside noise from intruding on inside activities. It also has the advantage of helping to contain sounds on the inside from escaping outdoors to bother neighbors. Impact windows are especially beneficial for individuals living near busy streets and intersections.

The windows minimize noise and enhance the value of homes. Installing impact windows can also net savings on insurance policies. The glass reacts in much the same way as auto glass when an impact occurs, helping to reduce the potential of damage from storms and acting as a deterrent to break-ins. With impact windows, individuals don’t have to worry about putting up storm shutters, storing them or the maintenance involved.

How Impact Glass Can Positively Affect your Wallet

Impact glass will affect your wallet and budget in a variety of positive ways. While it’s true that the initial cost outlay is typically more than for traditional storm shutters and panels, that cost is more than offset by the benefits and ways it can save money over the long-term.

Safety and Security

Impact glass will splinter, but it won’t break and shatter like ordinary glass. No would-be criminal is going to want to expend the time and effort or risk the noise that they’ll make, that will be required to actually break impact glass. Impact glass is a definite deterrent to break-ins.

Storage and Maintenance

Storm shutters are relatively inexpensive options, but they take up valuable storage space when they’re not in use. They also require periodic maintenance to ensure they’re in proper working condition. Impact glass is a once-and-done solution and the only maintenance required is ordinary glass cleaning.

Time Savings

It requires a considerable amount of time to retrieve storm panels and erect them. Even if you have attached storm shutters, you’ll still need to ensure they’re working properly. If they’re not, you’ll have to repair or replace them and both options are time-consuming endeavors.

UV Protection

You may not realize it, but every time sunlight enters your home, UV and infrared rays also enter that are detrimental to furnishings, floor coverings and drapes. All of those items can be expensive to replace due to fading and discoloration. Impact glass prevents premature damage while allowing the light to enter.

Sound Buffering

Noise pollution is a very real problem that can affect people psychologically. Impact glass will beautify your home while significantly reducing outside sounds and noise that can interrupt sleep and disrupt family time. It also provides a buffer to keep indoor sounds from escaping to annoy your neighbors. You don’t have to install expensive fencing or soundproofing to get the peace, quiet and privacy you deserve.

Convenience

The convenience of impact windows and doors can’t be overstated. You can go on vacation anywhere in the world without worrying about hiring someone to secure your home if a hurricane strikes or performing repairs if damage occurs. Impact glass is installed once and it will continue to protect your home in a variety of wallet-friendly ways and provide piece of mind.

Impact Windows for Hurricane Protection

In South Florida, homeowners faced an estimated $15.4 billion in insured damages from Hurricane Harvey alone, most of it was wind-related damage. The hurricane season spans from June to November in Florida and includes a number of tropical storms and hurricanes which are capable of producing severe wind speeds of at least 80 miles per hour. Because the threat of hurricanes are part of the natural life of South Florida, home owners have been seeking ways to properly prepare for the possibility of severe weather in the months leading up to the hurricane season. While many homeowners have taken direct action and replaced all windows and doors, there are still some other options that should be considered. These include the installation of storm shutters or hurricane windows, as well as the use of impact windows and other types of hurricane protection equipment in order to properly protect your home from the effects of any potential hurricanes.

Although it is possible to purchase windows that can resist winds of up to eighty miles per hour, these products are typically only suitable for the coastal regions of Florida and the Eastern United States. These specially designed windows cannot withstand hurricanes that reach a Category III or greater, although they can often withstand the hurricane zone (a category that includes hurricane rated from a maximum of Category III and higher). However, the hurricane zone is not the only thing that an impact window should be able to withstand. Impact windows can withstand all of the force of a wind speed of up to two hundred miles per hour, although most do not have the strength to completely abate the force of a hurricane on steroids.

Impact windows have been designed specifically to withstand winds of all strength levels. This means that regardless of whether you live in a hurricane zone or not, impact windows installed properly can still withstand strong winds of up to two hundred miles per hour. Furthermore, they are made out of materials such as aluminum, lead, and fiberglass that are designed to resist flying debris. This means that even if the windows are hit by flying debris they will not shatter.

Impact windows meet all of the hurricane code requirements that are required by your local building codes. In addition to meeting all of the building code requirements, these windows also are certified with a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) rating. This means that these windows meet the highest standards of safety that the building codes in your state will allow.

In order to have impact windows installed, it is important that you find a company that can perform the work correctly. The best way to make sure you find a professional and reputable company that can meet all of your needs and expectations is to ask for references.
